When two parents are carriers of the same genetic condition, each child has a 1 in 4 (25%) chance of having that autosomal recessive condition. Depending on the urgency of the results for the couple, individuals may wish to start with one member of the couple, and, if identified as a carrier of a genetic condition, then proceed with the other member of the couple. Sometimes, there may be provincial funding available to cover genetic testing for the other member of the couple. For individuals requiring urgent information, couples may wish to get screened at the same time to have a combined report that lists reproductive risk (chance of having an affected child) in a rapid 2-3 week turnaround.  Each partner will require an individual requisition, and will submit separate samples.

You can pay for your Expanded Carrier Screen test(s) in advance.

You can pay for your Expanded Carrier Screen test(s) in advance. Each person being tested will need to complete a requisition form and pay for each test. The cost of each test is $813, and charges will be incurred at the time of online payment. Tests are refundable up until the time you have your sample collected. You are encouraged to check with your private healthcare insurer to see if coverage is provided. Please note, that funding for certain ethnicity-specific genetic screens do exist and vary by province, likely requiring a referral to medical genetics. Examples of ethnicity-specific carrier screens include (but are not limited to) the Ashkenazi Jewish or French Canadian populations.
