Research and Preferred Provider

Free, accredited CPD program for healthcare professionals

This eCME is directed to primary care clinicians (family physicians, nurse practitioners and pharmacists) in the therapeutic area of pharmacogenetic testing and personalized medicine. This one-hour program will be accredited through the CFPC and CCCEP.

Pharmacogenomics (PGx) focuses on understanding how genes affect individual responses to medications, i.e., the relationship between drug responses and genetic variants.PGx testing provides objective data about specific aspects of an individual’s genetic makeup that may predict an individual’s response to medications. For example, the liver enzyme CYP2D6 is involved in metabolizing a quarter of all prescriptions, and exists in more than 160 known variants. Some variants can negatively impact how particular drugs are metabolized by individuals who carry the variants.

This program will highlight implications of PGx testing that apply specifically to the primary care setting, and provide information on common scenarios to prepare the primary care clinician to effectively incorporate PGx testing into practice when appropriate.

This Self-Learning program has been certified by the College of Family Physicians of Canada for up to 1.00 Mainpro+ Credit(s).

Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing

New program for physicians: In this program we will review the role of non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT), explore new advances in NIPT in prenatal screening as of fall 2017, and offer support for counselling expectant patients on these topics.

Practitioners will gain an understanding of new advances in:

  • The role of NIPT

  • NIPT for microdeletion syndromes

  • NIPT for twin pregnancies

  • NIPT for surrogate and egg donor pregnancies

This event is an Accredited Group Learning Activity (Section 1) as defined by the Maintenance of Certification program of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and is approved by the Division of Continuing Professional Development, University of Manitoba for a maximum of 1.00 Hour(s). Participants should only claim credit for the actual number of hours attended.

Partner with LifeLabs Genetics at a Project, Program, or Organizational Level

LifeLabs Genetics provides customized laboratory testing of human samples as a service to clients working in academic research, family health clinics, government agencies, pharmaceutical and diagnostics companies, medical device manufacturers, and contract research organizations.

Projects range from single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) based panel testing and whole exome and genome sequencing for research, all the way to preferred provider agreements for a specific type of genetic test, for a certain population and a certain amount of time.

By engaging our people, processes, and technologies in new and innovative ways, LifeLabs Genetics supports Canadian advancement in diagnostics and disease management. We are proud to work with the public and private sectors to build and keep genetics expertise in Canada.

Customizable Project Options

At LifeLabs Genetics, we provide ethical, clinical genetic testing to the highest standard. While aspects of our testing approach must be upheld to maintain standards, we can customize other steps and elements of the process (e.g., forms, data file formats, reports, translations) to meet your specific needs.

The LifeLabs Genetics team will work with you to define and execute customized preferred provider collection, testing, reporting, and research programs. We regularly provide support for specific terms/durations, predefined batches of tests, and by set quotas. All contracts are built around your goals, patients, projects, and research.

Collection and Logistic Support

LifeLabs Genetics clients have access to one of the country’s largest sample collection and logistic networks, including:

  • National specimen collection
  • Proprietary courier system
  • Compliance with all transportation and laboratory regulations

Account Management

A dedicated project team efficiently and effectively delivers your study milestones on target and on time. The clinical value of information derived from a genetic test depends greatly on the collection and handling of the specimens submitted for analysis. Correct patient preparation and proper specimen collection, processing, storage, and transportation are essential for accuracy. LifeLabs Genetics is committed to minimizing errors and delays in sample collection and preparation of specimens for transport.

Testing, Data Management, and Reporting

Sample analysis is performed to mutually acceptable, Canadian standards and metrics on regularly maintained and calibrated equipment. Whether we perform the test in-house in Toronto or work on your behalf with our international partner laboratories, we offer exceptional testing turnaround times to meet your study needs.

Applying thoughtful bioinformatics and clinical data management (CDM) strategies leads to high-quality, reliable, and statistically sound data. Our bioinformatics and data management team members are actively involved in all stages of your project, from inception to completion. Our data management team will create the database design, data specifications annotation, data-entry data validation, test coding, data extraction, and finalize database locking based on your study needs. We can customize reports for target audiences and deliver them in multiple electronic file formats.

We work with hospitals, clinics, family health teams, academic institutions, pharmaceutical companies, retail pharmacies, device manufacturers, retirement homes, private payers and government across a range of commercial and academic ventures.

By applying our clinical operational and commercial expertise to healthcare challenges we make meaningful contributions to advancing life science initiatives.
